Appropiation Reflection
V-Day Emoji Kiss
In this example, I took the famous photograph from V-Day in which a sailor embraces a nurse and kisses her and added the kissing emoji over their faces to add a modern twist on it. Emoji’s have became a staple of this generation and millions of them are used every day in Tweets, Facebook status and text messages. I thought that, if the Second World War was to end today, millions of Tweets and Facebook status’s would be made, nearly all of which would make use of emoji’s.
Afghan Cover Girl
The historic photograph portrait of a dishevelled Sharbat Gula, better known as the Afghan Girl, staring unblinkingly into the camera as her eyes pierce the lens, was the cover of National Geographic 1985 June addition. At the time, Gula was a living in Pakistan as a refugee during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The manner in which Gula was photographed is similar to the way in which celebrity’s are photographed when they appeared on the cover of magazines such as Vouge. I felt that the image of Gula was very similar to a typical cover of Vouge, as though it was a third world interpretation of a first worlds idea of beauty. The image itself has been described as, “The first worlds, third world Mona Lisa”
Playstaion 1 Homeless Advertisement
For this example, I took a picture of my own PlayStation 1 and changed the colours to black and white, making it look dreary. I then manually added the text to match it to the style of a Salvation Army “Help the Homeless” advertisement, parodying the advert.
